PALIMPSEST- working over an erased surface
My work builds on the work of my mentor and colleague, Herman Scholten (1932-2013), who constructed irregularly shaped weavings by working with yarns and pins on his studio wall. I began working with the traces that had been left on this wall by the pins, a map of contours of his wall hangings. Thirty years of the holes left by pins in his studio were transferred to my own studio. I followed the traces this left by covering each of the pinholes with a unique dot of colour, eventually producing a series of 11 large pieces, which I see as a continuation from the point where Herman Scholten stopped working.
