It was to be an expression of calm luxury, with modern, clean lines to embrace views and spaces. We used warm, generous materials for grounding and tying together. The manipulation of light quality further enhances the chosen materials. The slated screens create patterns of shade and light and give a sense of softness and tranquility.
One of the major features of the house is the apparent lack of structure. There is in fact an extremely intelligent structure sitting behind this transparency and seamless integration to the outdoors. Working with Nik Moroff brought the project to life and enabled us to achieve our vision.
The landscape design is crucial to the house. We worked at blurring the corners of the property to create links to adjacent views of greenery. This means the eye is drawn outwards and a dynamic set of experiences is created. The landscape filters and frames the sea views. It creates numerous discrete planting experiences as one moves through the house. One of the most powerful of these experiences is the entrance courtyard. We wanted a subliminal connection to memories and experiences. These would be prompted by the sounds of water, the smell of the earth and planting, through seeing variations in lighting and shadows on rocks and leaf movements, and water reflecting the sun. The courtyard is an experience that prepares you for a different set of sensations after coming in off the street.
It is so important for clients to visualize their house before approval and that is why our software is so important. This is a render of the design which our client was exceptionally happy with. In addition to the software helping us general 3D images it also assists us in construction. See the photo below of the completed house and how close reality is to the virtual - in this way we can guarentee our clients gets what they expect.
See how beautifully the reality matches the virtual image before
The whole building team was so committed to the vision and making it a reality
Jenny loves being a presence on site to ensure everything is gong to plan and to be of assistance if the site dictates that the plan must change.
The house was a 'smart' house in that many of the systems were state of the art automated - There was also a home cinema and amazing sound system. The design of house (tranquil, clean spaces) did not permit for any such services to be seen so they have all be very cleverly hidden (yet accessible) but allow the inhabitants to just enjoy the spaces and their views.
This door leads to the entrance courtyard - see below
The landscape design was very important to the house, especially adding to the atmosphere and how the spaces made one feel. The entrance courtyard takes one off the street and transports you to the house - calm, clean and tranquil space. It does so through enticing our senses - we hear the water, feel the cool air, smell the earth and experience the garden

This custom designed water feature in the entrance courtyard really adds to the soothing feeling it provides
Once moving through the entrance courtyard one enters the house through this door - the custom designed door allow one to see through the whole house, across the lawn and pool and to the ocean beyond. It is a special moment
Muted tones, beautiful spacious dining room
rich timber finishes gave the house a warm feeling
The inside flows so easily to outside - a very comfotable space
table outside next to the braai and swimming pool. Even though it is outside, it is still very well connected to the rest of the house
Here you can see how the garden table is so well connected spatially to the interior because there is seemingly no structure and sliding doors open up completely
The landscape design (Nicholas Whitehorn was the designer) was very important to the design of the house and the overall atmosphere of the site. The house has panoramic views over the Atlantic Seaboard and usually designers would be skeptical of planting trees in fear of losing views but these trees have been strategically placed to allow views and achieve a calming feeling. It means the house blends in so well to the indigenous environment of Lions Head right behind it.

The trees and shutters allow the house to blend into its environment and context while also capturing views and permitting privacy
... and she how beautiful the effect of the shutters is on the inside. Their calming effect manipulates light and flows through the house
