This project saw the renovation and extension of an existing 1960’s detached house in Haslemere, Surrey.
The owners of the property appointed ArchitectureLIVE to conduct in-depth site analysis and develop the brief before any designs were considered. Our clients wanted to make an architectural statement with the new design and create new open-plan living, a master bedroom suite and refurbish the exterior typical of 1960s properties.
The approach to the house was dominated by cars and an out-dated car port. Inside, the layout made no benefit from the southerly facing garden and rooms were rigidly defined.
ArchitectureLIVE's design completely transformed the building. A new extension houses an open-plan kitchen and dining area on the ground floor with the internal reconfigurations focused on grouping all necessary services and utilities in a central service pod.
Our design also reinvented the carport as a new, open-plan, dual-aspect entrance hall and multifunctional space. This new area has full height glazing which floods the area with daylight and permits partial views onto a courtyard garden. Further light streams in through a central feature roof light.
The creation of this entrance hall allowed for the entire ground floor layout to be opened up into a series of fluid spaces, all re-oriented towards the garden benefiting from direct access onto a large floating terrace which terminates in the courtyard garden at the rear of the new entrance hall.
To enjoy the views of the garden, the master bedroom suite is cantilevered over the new terrace and features a Juliet balcony with double height glazing.
The chosen cladding material for all new build extension is black artificial slate, in complete contrast to the new, white insulated render finish applied to the existing walls. Thermal improvements were made to all the existing building fabrics and a new heating system was installed.

The existing 1960s carport was reconfigured to create a dual aspect Entrance Hallway with aluminium powder coated windows providing full-height glazing at either end.
A new double-aspect entrance hall features full-height glazing and a roof light above. To the rear the entrance hall leads out to a beautifully landscaped terrace and garden.

Roughly sawn engineered timber was used for flooring, kitchen island and concealed door to the garage.
The kitchen features a bespoke island, integrated appliances, engineered timber flooring and LED strip lighting.
