Timber frame with hemp & lime

This new-build dwelling combines innovative and sustainable building construction, with a modern-vernacular design which is responsive to its rural context. It is a two-bedroom house of approx 70m2 and it was designed for a 90 year-old.

It is set well above the flood-level of a fast flowing river with mature beech trees to the north. The site was most exposed to public view from the road descending towards the bridge, hence the specification of a turf-roof on the northern side. The slated roof to the south reflects the local roof forms of nearby buildings and including a converted water-mill.

In addition to providing a dwelling one objective was to demonstrate how natural and low-impact materials can be use to create energy efficient buildings.
