This West Country mill house stands detached, overlooking 2 mill ponds with abundant wildlife. The large renovation and extension project was carried out in 2015 and finalised in 2016.
The old warren of outbuildings, corridors, kitchen, living space and utility rooms were modernised and replaced with a large, warm and live/work space in a modern single storey accommodation, whilst the upper floors of the existing house were remodelled and renovated. Great care was taken to ensure that the flow between old and new spaces were much improved and new, natural circulation routes allow the family to move imperceptibly through the space. With openings on three aspect on most rooms, windows and doorways provide a link with the outside, allowing light to flow in and access to the garden can be made from all the rooms. Care was given to making sure that none of original building features were lost during the building works. Window shapes were replicated to maintain the balance on an already quirky building. Original features such as architraves, skirting and cornices were retained during the renovation. To enhance the original features, the modern extension is a contemporary building, making the most of modern technology with underfloor heating embedded in the polished concrete floor, high levels of insulation, double glazed windows and low energy appliances. The new polished concrete floor allows a seamless junction between the two structures. Light is maximised with large roof lights that introduce as much natural light as possible into the studio and the living spaces on the ground floor.
