Bold double-height zinc-clad kitchen extension to gable of Victorian dwelling, Des Ewing Residential Architects Des Ewing Residential Architects Modern home

A beautiful Victorian semi-detached house, with a stunning mature garden, but with no connection between the two parts. The contemporary design solution moved the kitchen and dining area down to the garden level. The kitchen is accessed via a spiral staircase that provides a sculptured feature within the double-height space. The new structure is a simple zinc-clad two-storey box with one glazed side which facing the garden. The extension is intended not to compete with the elegant proportions of this fine Victorian house but to reflect what the Victorians might have done had these contemporary materials been available to them.
