Sanlúcar de Barrameda is a historic seaside resort of Andalucía, Spain. Over the years it has been witness to a diverse set of architectural influences. All these varied threads seem to have been united in the interior of the house we are going to show you today.

It is steeped in the colourful history of Southern Spain. Yet, its décor is also influenced by oriental design, while also retaining a raw rustic edge. But irrespective of the sources of inspiration, the end result turns out to be unlike any other. Let's step inside this house to have a closer look at its finer details…

Dining room with an eclectic charm

As you step inside this open plan dining room, the first thing that will catch your attention is the unusual nature of the décor. A wooden dining table hanging by ropes, curious wall art and large shells hanging from the ceiling above are bound to pique your interests. The cane chairs deserve a special mention too.

The space is decorated with a colour scheme which is dominated by shades of grey, green and a somewhat timid shade of yellow. In interior design, quirkiness often gets a bad name. However, you must remember some of the iconic designs were born out of a singular thinking pattern. Despite the quirky choices, Ramón Castellanos’ House of Shells evokes a genuine sense of style which is an indication of its being a masterpiece.

Living room

The spacious living room is stylised with bamboo flooring and large couches made of wood and other organic materials. The unique design of every piece of furniture helps to create a graceful interior

You can see a genuine appreciation for art. Each of the walls are decorated with large framed images. Several art installations are seen scattered across the expansive interior.

Another view of the living room

You can see clear oriental influences in the spacious doorway. The double height living room feels delightful enough. But a fascinating mix of various architectural nuances gives it a special look.

On the other side of the large door lies a small outdoor entertainment zone, which we will visit shortly.

Terrace design

This is not exactly a terrace meant for seating and enjoying the surrounding scenery. It acts as a bridge between the two modules of the building and also gives the entrance way a very special appearance.

The water feature is its main attraction. Potted plants and lighting fixtures are also used to beautify the area. On the other side of the sliding doorway, you can see the living room.

Outdoor entertainment zone

A combination of shabby chic chairs and glass top table decorates this small patio. A giant piece of log acts as a table stand.

Stone flooring generates a cool country feel and the large glass window is decorated with an organic blind. Out of the view, an entire wall is dedicated to an enormous vertical garden.

Main bedroom

A modern platform bed occupies a prominent position in this room. This space is designed with a combination of organic furniture with refined look and vintage charm.

The rectangular room is spacious and has provisions for a lounge and small study.

Bathtub in the bedroom

The bedroom is designed with an en suite bathroom without any internal wall separating the two. This is another modern trend adored by many.

River pebble flooring separates the bathroom from the bedroom portion. Except for the bathtub with a planter, it has a stylish vanity unit and shell shaped wash basin.

Spacious balcony

The spacious balcony on the first floor level is decked up with swing chairs, cosy benches and recliners. Several etchings and paintings liven up the walls.

A tiny home office is built on the far side of the room. Actual sea shells have been used to enhance the charm of this space as well.

Secondary bathroom

This expansive villa boasts of several common and en suite bathrooms. This one is decorated with blue tiles and stone flooring.

Rustic wooden furniture, a bathtub, wicker baskets, a frameless mirror and wall mounted shelves decorate this space. The shell basin is one of its most attractive pieces.

Tropical loggia

Elevated on a rustic wooden platform, this outdoor living room seems to be the perfect place to survey the changing face of the sky all day long. The city’s ancient skyline can be appreciated from this space as well. It is decorated with organic chairs with snug cushions and a small glass top coffee table. Thatched shade keeps the area cool in the hot summer sun. Hand woven organic mats have been installed as railings and vintage tiles decorate the floor.

The wholesome décor of the House of Shells continues to receive hearty appreciation from everyone. Despite the unusual design choices, it remains a comfortable and expansive home to live in and enjoy. Now it is your turn to be inspired by its design and give your home such a unique feel.
