If we don’t learn from our mistakes, we are doomed to repeat them. Sounds quite ominous, but here on homify we always like to keep it positive, which is why, for today’s piece, we are not only listing 8 of the most common mistakes encountered when decorating your kitchen, but also ways in which you can sidestep said mistakes and, thus, learn from them!

Pay close attention…

1. Too many open cabinets – include some doors so you don’t have to show off your horde of kitchen appliances and other culinary goodies.

2. Too few sockets for electrical gadgets – plan properly and include enough so you don’t need to unplug your juicer to get the toaster working, for example.

3. Not enough ventilation – with all those hot air and scents, it’s best to include as many windows, skylights and doors as possible.

4. A visible dustbin – nobody needs to see what your trash consists of. Rather keep it behind a closed cabinet door, or behind the corner in the scullery / laundry room.

5. Too much stainless steel – too much shine will diminish your kitchen’s warmth and character. Be sure to include some wood, tiles, concrete, glass, etc.

6. Inadequate lighting – opt for layered lighting (ceiling light, wall sconces, etc.) so that every surface in your kitchen is clearly visible.

7. Inconvenient knobs and handles – as you’re opening those cabinets and drawers countless times, be sure to opt for hardware that’s easy to grasp.

8. Making it impractical – beauty is not everything, so as your kitchen also needs to be cosy, include comfy seating spots for those unforeseen social events.
