You don't have to wait for the new year or some other annual ceremony (spring cleaning!) to clean some of the overused appliances in your house like the fridge and microwave. While you regularly clean certain parts of the house like the floor or the bathroom, appliances are usually overlooked. Not cleaning your appliances can alter their optimum performance. It's important to clean them regularly and here are some tips on how to do it.

Pay attention to the kitchen

Did you know that more than any other room in the house, the kitchen is the most vulnerable to dust, germs, and mold? Some kitchen appliances may be difficult to clean, don't be intimated because there are easy ways to do it.

Cleaning the microwave using dish soap

Fill a microwave safe bowl with warm water and dishwashing liquid. Put it in the microwave for one minute until it starts to steam. Take the bowl out and wipe the inside of the microwave with damp sponge. The steam will allow you to clean the microwave easier.

Again, fill a microwave safe bowl with water. This time, add several slices of lemon or tablespoons of distilled white vinegar. Place the cup in the microwave for three minutes until the window is covered in steam. Open the microwave and wipe the interior with clean cloth.

Cleaning the fridge

Use a sponge dipped in a solution of water and baking soda. Scrub every surface of the interior including the removable components. The exterior can be wiped with traditional cleaner. If you want to clean the condenser coil at the back of the appliance, don't forget to unplug it first. Dust the coil and vacuum the area around it.

Keeping the fridge clean

Start a healthy habit of removing every thing from your fridge every quarter to check for expired food. Throw what you cannot eat or drink anymore. Wipe the shelves with a solution of warm water and baking soda to deodorize it.
