Today we will be traveling to Fukuoka, a city situated on the shores of Kyushu Island in Japan to explore a family home by the design team at Matsuoka Architects. Although it is located in a rather densely populated area, the strategic placement of the windows in the façade offers the family necessary privacy. Further, the contemporary design of the abode makes a statement tucked amidst many other houses in the surrounding area. The two-storey structure consists of one large, interconnected living area at its base. Due to this layout, the home has been named the Link House. Many thoughtful details were incorporated directly into the architecture of the home, allowing for adequate storage, which helps create a space for a young family to thrive. Its wooden interior encourages the dissemination of sunshine throughout, making it a pleasant and comfortable place for young children. This home is even equipped with a deck! Come with us as we explore the many merits of the Link House.

Mysterious depth and detail

The contemporary design of this home makes it stand out from its surroundings. The carport completes stylish, cubic structure. The black façade and inset windows with timber frames give the home an air of mystery that results in additional privacy. It’s a split-level home that is ideal for a young family. Looking carefully, there are lots of pleasant little details involving the layering of various colours and textures. We love the little concrete steps ascending to the entrance.

Expertly designed open-plan

The home opens to a spacious, open-plan first floor living area. The architects employ some unique strategies for giving the open space some definition. The low wall separates the kitchen area from the living room. The living room space is designated to that lying with the inbuilt steps. The inbuilt steps themselves offer a bit of extra storage for games, toys, and media accessories. The ample natural light complements the pale coloured wooden interior. The minimalist style of design works wonderfully in such a setting.

Thoughtful additions and built-in storage spaces

Orienting ourselves to face the other way, we see that there is more built-in shelving connected to the ceiling, and an adjacent closet ideal for storing bikes, shoes and coats. The thoughtful inclusion of a bench allows family members a place to sit and put on their shoes before heading out. Interestingly, the stairs descend right into the inbuilt living room.

Utilising every space to its fullest potential

Heading upstairs, we can see a little office space located in the corridor that is equally illuminated in natural sunlight. The desk is elongated and made narrow to fit neatly into the designated space. The built-in bookcase is a necessary implement for this family as they have lots of workbooks and discs to house. The second storey also contains bedrooms.

A private home that offers a secluded outdoor space

As the sun sets and we leave this family home, we ought to check out the deck around back. Visible through the large sliding glass doors, it’s perfect for the youngsters to play and for the parents to enjoy a drink and relax outdoors. All the while, this spot is still enclosed within the privacy of home’s design.
