Sound insulation is a tricky subject. At first, it might seem like a task fit only for experts, however, we assure you, making your bedroom relatively sound proof is not as difficult as it might seem.

We all desire bedrooms that give us peace and space for rejuvenation, however, this can be only be achieved if the bedroom we live in is immune from external factors, mainly noise pollution. Today, noise pollution, especially for houses those are located very close to the streets is a serious problem. Although it might not be a feasible solution to stairghtaway change the house, you can adopt certain ideas that can definitely help you in reducing the stress caused by noise pollution.

1.Using heavy curtains

Using thick heavy curtains and soft surfaces is also an effective measure to reduce noise pollution. By installing thick curtains on the windows facing the street, you can cut off a substantial amount of sound that can otherwise enter your bedroom space. Make sure you opt for thick curtains that complement the color scheme of other design elements in the house, you will be surprised to know the huge amount of choices that you will get in the market!

2.Moving away from the external wall

The easiest thing you can do is to move your bed away from the wall that directly faces the external edge of the building. This way you can move away from the source of noise, to be effective you can place small furniture elements such as a study table or lounge chairs which will allow in the natural light but at the same time provide barriers to reflect sound.

3.Balconies as a buffer space

Balconies which are separated from the bedroom by means of a partition are highly effective in curbing noise pollution. As a result of the partition between the bedroom and the balcony as well as the balcony and the external face of the building, the balcony effectively renders itself as buffer space which is very similar to how a sound proof double glazed unit works.

4.Partitions to block noise

Another simple way by which you can block noise pollution is by installing glass partitions. Such partitions are not only cost effective but are also a good solution to achieve the desired privacy along with better sound insulation.

5.Walls with textured surfaces

From an acoustical point of view, textured surfaces are far more effective in sound reverberation as compared to surfaces that are polished and smooth. You can opt for artistic looking rough surfaces such as this unfinished brick wall that looks splendid while at the same time provides effective sound proofing. 

6.Carpets as a means to reduce noise

Similar to thick curtains, carpets are a good measure to curb excessive sound. The soft texture of the carpets provides a good surface that absorbs unnecessary reflection of sound within the room, a feature which is highly effective in controlling disturbance caused due to noise. Apart from reducing noise pollution, carpets also add a nice warmth and coziness to the bedroom and subsequently offers you a space that is perfect for rejuvenating your tired sences.

7.Fix squeaky windows

Perhaps this is one the biggest causes why your bedroom is disturbed by external street sounds. Make sure that your windows are well insulated and can be locked properly when you close them. Many a time small cracks or a worn out a locking system is the culprit behind the disturbing sounds.

8.A bed with enclosure

Another simple trick to have a peaceful sleep is opting for a bed that allows you to hang curtains or any other fabric along its perimeter. This way you can achieve an extremely cost efficient solution that will not only cut sound but also visual disturbances in case you live very close to the streets. 

9.Outside landscape

If you can afford some additional space outside your house, creating a small garden with an abundance of potted plants and shrubs can prove as a great idea to curb noise pollution. Plants are known for their ability to act as an excellent buffer; when combined with a strong boundary wall that is built along the street, such a setting can definitely help you to have a peaceful bedroom to unwind after a busy day at work.

10.Ceiling with uneven patterns

The market currently is flooded with false ceiling products that offer improved acoustic performance. Most of them are pretty effective, however, if you want to go a step further, you can experiment with ceilings with varying patterns which are effective in reducing noise pollution. The wooden rafters in this example effectively break the surface of the ceiling and are extremely efficient in helping the users to have a relatively quiet ambiance in the bedroom.
