We may not spend as much time in our bathrooms as say, the living room or the kitchen, but having a clean and pleasant salle de bains is equally as important as having a lovely lounge. However, when it comes to picking a rental property compromise is a part of the process, and it seem as though the bathroom is often the space that suffers.

This can leave us with the dilemma of what to do with a less than brilliant rental bathroom, after all, as a rental we’re restricted as to what we can change.

With this in mind we’ve put together a list of seventeen smart ways that you can improve your bathroom while making only minor changes, allowing you to revamp your rental bathroom without incurring the wrath of your landlord.

 Let’s get started…

1. Flowers

Fresh flowers can breathe life into a dreary bathroom.

2. Candles

Candles can help to create a relaxing, pleasant ambiance allowing you to enjoy the time you spend in the bath.

3. Photos

Fill your bathroom with artistic photos to distract from an unpleasant colour scheme.

4. Luxury products

Luxury products on display—such as cosmetics and towels—along with a few attractive accents will improve the atmosphere of the space.

5. Replace the shower head

You can't make any major changes, but surely replacing the shower head is ok?

6. Change the shower curtain

A stylish new shower curtain is a simple change that can go some way toward improving the space.

7. Cover the floor

If the floor is particularly unpleasant there are ways in which you can cover it that won't upset your landlord: you could lay strips of wooden decking resembling that in the shower pictured above, or peel and stick adhesive vinyls.

8. Hide pipes with a plant

A large, leafy plant can cover unsightly exposed pipes.

9. Make space with a mirror

If the room's small or dark make more light and space with mirrors.

10. A better bathmat

A lovely bathmat like the one pictured above can be used to cover unflattering floors.

11. Art

Art can add a personal touch and distract from dreary décor.

12. Increase the storage space

Any room will benefit from storage space that removes clutter. A few nice storage boxes like those pictured above can help to create space in a small bathroom.

13. Make sure it smells nice

A few scented candles can help to create a more pleasant environment in your bathroom. Alternatively, incense or potpourri will work too.

14. Polish the fixtures

Polish if you can't replace to get your old fixtures looking as good as new.

15. Lamps and better lighting

Change the lighting: if the room's too dark add a lamp, change the light shade or even just install a higher watt bulb!

16. Replace the toilette seat

Such a minor change will surely be allowed, especially if the old seat has seen better days.

17. Deep clean

Vacuuming the floor and bleaching the toilette are one thing, but a proper, deep clean is another. Deep clean every part of your rental bathroom and you'll be surprised how much better it looks.
