Your home should be a safe haven, a private sanctuary away from the rest of the world, unfortunately no home is ever 100 per cent safe. We always have to be vigilant about protecting our personal possessions, especially when it comes to money. While the best place to store money is always the bank, some people prefer to keep a stash of cash somewhere in there home for emergencies, and if this sounds like you, we want to help you keep that money safe.

The thing to remember about hiding money is that thieves have probably thought about it longer and harder than you, and many of the most common choices for hiding money are well known and more obvious than you might think. Safes and lockboxes are always the best option for storing money in the home, but if you need a temporary fix we at least hope you don't make the mistake of using these 7 hiding places that you should absolutely avoid at all costs.

1. Under the mattress

Probably the most common and widely known hiding place for money is under the mattress, which is precisely why you should never do it. We've all heard stories about sweet old ladies hide their lifesavings under the mattress only to have it taken, and it's probably going to be the first place a potential thief looks. Make sure that the only thing anyone will find under your bed is an odd sock or two.

2. In wallets or handbags

When you think you've misplaced some cash the first place you look is in your handbag or wallet, and that's exactly what any home invader will be thinking. Make sure that if you have a decent amount of money on you you put it somewhere safe as soon as you get home, because leaving it in your wallet is just asking for trouble.

3. Dressers, drawers, and armoires

Places that denote opulence like dressers and armoires are already going to invite the attention of thieves due to the potential for finding luxury items like perfume and jewellery, so hiding cash there will only give them a bonus prize.

4. Buried in the garden

You want to avoid cliches as much as possible; they're cliches for a reason, and they're the first place a thief will look, so burying money in your garden is a huge mistake. People can catch you in the act of burying the money, it's very hard to hide the evidence of a recent hole, and even in the safest neighbourhood word can spread quickly.

Burying money in the garden also puts your money at the risk of water damage, as well as being discovered by nosy cats and dogs! And on top of all of that it also gives you far less of a chance of catching any potential thieves in the act, as they can work quietly away outside while you sleep.

5. In laundry baskets

This may seem like a spot that no thief would check, but the fact of the matter is given enough time they will turn your home upside down regardless, and the laundry basket is not quite as sneaky a hiding place as you might think. It's also an issue of keeping the money safe from yourself, the last thing you want to do is accidentally put your life savings through a spin cycle!

6. The bedside table

It may feel safe keeping your valuables right beside your bed, but it's actually a rather obvious hiding spot, and while we're sure it's not the case, for the sake of caution we always have to assume that the thieves are smarter than us.

The bedside table is fine for removing your jewellery after a night out, but if you're leaving your home for any amount of time you need to find a more secure spot such as a safe, there's plenty of options right here!

7 Behind picture frames

If you've seen it in the movies, so has a thief. Don't try to be too clever about your hiding places, and certainly don't take advice from Hollywood, hiding money in picture frames is extremely risky!

As we said, the safest place for your cash and valuables is at the bank, but as long as you avoid these obvious spots we're sure you'll be able to keep your possessions secure. For more helpful tips, check out this article on common decor blunders!
