While it's not always the first thing we think of when it comes to interior decorating, the floor of your home can serve as the basis for the entire decor. Unvarnished hardwood could inspire you to go with a shabby chic theme, while marble tiles may inspire you to decorate your home with elegance and sophistication. On the other hand, having the wrong floor can completely undo all the good work you've done in the planning stages.

Because they are so integral to the decor, they are subject to the same fashion trends as interior decorating, with different styles falling in and out of favour depending on the tastemakers of the moment, and frankly it can be hard to keep up. That's why here at homify we've collected 10 of our favourite flooring trends in Malaysia to help you to stay on the cutting edge, and keep your home decor modern and exciting. There's all kinds of different styles happening at the moment, and you're sure to find one you love, so join us as we check them out!

1. Parquet flooring

Parquet flooring has a rich history, and can be seen in some of the most beautiful architecture in the world, so it's no surprise it makes our list. Here they've used a diagonal pattern, reminiscent of herringbone, but perfectly symmetrical. The pattern is dynamic, and the contrasting hues and grains of the timber contrast beautifully.

2. Patterned carpet

Carpet sees a lot of swings in and out of favour in the world of interior decorating. For a while it was standard in almost every home, before seeing its popularity dwindle in favour of hardwood floors, but it's back, and we think this time it's here to stay. Patterned carpet is far more interesting than your standard monotone fare, replicating the look of tiles, but with the warmth and comfort of carpet.

3. Terracotta tiles

The beautiful weather of Malaysia makes it the perfect place for Mediterranean style decors, and that means terracotta floor tiles in kitchens, bathrooms, and especially outdoor patio areas!

4. Marble floors

Marble is one of the most elegant building materials around, due to its smooth sheen, and natural variation in colour and pattern. If you want a sophisticated and cultured decor, then marble floors are the way to go.

5. Two tone flooring

It's rare that floors are treated as a decorative element, but all that is about to change. Notice how the curving shape on the floor mirrors the recessed ceiling above, creating a really interesting effect that gives this space energy and vigour. Using two different tones for your floor is a great way to liven up the decor and make your home unique and memorable.

6. Hardwood in rich tones

One of the benefits of hardwood floors is the variation in grain and colour produced by different types of timber, but the hottest trend right now is rich dark hues full of depth and character.

7. Concrete floors

Two trends that are only going to gain momentum in 2017 are rustic and industrial style decors, both of which share the characteristic of letting the natural materials used for construction as design features. This means concrete floors are going to be big, they're smooth, cool, and give your room a funky edge.

8. Patterned tiles

Patterned tiles are another classic making a big comeback in Malaysia, and it's easy to see why. There's so many different patterns and colours available that there's always something that will suit your home, just take a look at what's available! They're not just a fantastic design element either, tiles are also incredibly low maintenance, making your home beautiful and your life easier.

9. Vintage chequered floor

If you're feeling a little bit nostalgic you're not alone, because black and white chequered floors are huge right now. They're effortlessly classy, giving your home a vintage vibe that looks great in any room of the house.

10. Rugs

If you want to reinvigorate your floor, but you don't have the time or money for a big renovation, then you'll be glad to hear of the latest trend. Rugs are gaining in popularity partly because they're just so versatile. You can choose a style that will suit your decor—exotic patterns, traditional designs, and faux fur are all the rage at the moment—and they're easy to rearrange, clean, and store.

With so many great options we can't wait to see what you choose for your home! For more great interior decorating tips check out this article!
