House E – 171 in the historically rich and important port city of Rosario in Argentina, has caught our attention today with its incredible transformation journey. It was lying in a shockingly dilapidated state before the renovation, and groaning under the burden of dank and crumbling walls and terribly shabby interiors. Surrounded by untamed wilderness, the property intimidated onlookers with its scary windows and doors, and a structure which bore all the signs of utter neglect. But when the architects at Elvarquitectos stepped in to change things, the old home turned into a stylish modern abode for comfy urban living. It now flaunts a structure which combines exposed bricks and concrete for a unique look, and elegant interiors. So let’s find out more about the makeover now.

Before: Derelict and neglected

The original building was a pitiful sight, with a ragged façade and paint and plaster peeling off from every wall. The rooms were no good either, with their shabby doors and windows, chipped paint and neglected walls and floor. The house was surrounded by wild brambles and a derelict boundary wall, which hardly improved matters. So all in all, it was utterly uninhabitable and the architects had to start from scratch to set things straight.

After: Brick and beautiful

The renovated house is simply amazing with its stylish linearity and rustic brick wall. The latter contrasts the industrial chic look of the grey metal gate and the white portions of the residence with panache, and exudes warm rusticity with an urban touch.

After: An inviting entrance

The rustic charm of brick walls continues to ensconce the simple but smart entrance too. The neat wooden door adds a dollop of cosy warmth against the cool grey and white touches on the concrete, while sleek slatted windows lend a trendy look and feel. A compact garden designed with pebbles and greens offers visual refreshment to guests, and softens the stark contemporary appearance of the house.

After: An open and elegant kitchen

Surrounded by glass doors and windows, the open and spacious kitchen receives ample sunlight during the day. Neat and sleek cabinets line the spaces above and below the countertop for effective storage, while bright under-cabinet lighting makes execution of culinary tasks easier. We also love how tiny black squares step in to break the monotony of the white floor, while the open plan layout celebrates modern interior design scheme with élan.

After: Contemporary designs rule

The abode enjoys a layered look in the backyard, with grey and white structural blocks uniting in a contrasting manner for visual interest. The portions that jut out from the main building offer shade during summers, and control the amount of natural light entering the home. The accent wall lined with bricks offer rustic respite against the modern background, and go extremely well with the lush greenness of the lawn.

After: Smart garage space

The patio adjoining the entrance of the home acts as a smart garage with its ventilated ceiling and touches of brick, white and grey. The area receives oodles of light and fresh air, and can be easily used as a barbeque spot or for outdoor parties.

The radical transformation of this once nightmarish property shows how modern and smart designs, clever mix of textures, and elegant hues can make a world of difference. For more ideas, check out another makeover story - A Portuguese House Goes from Ruins to Ravishing.
